This ashram is known to be the resting place of the sage Atri. Atri meditated here with his devout wife Anusuya. Legend says that during the exile Lord Rama and Mother Sita visited Sati Anusuya at this ashram. Sati Anusuya used to teach Mother Sita during this time. There is large statue of Lord Krishna riding a chariot with Arjun sitting behind him which depicts a Mahabharata scene. Inside it are more sculptures with interesting artwork, kept for sacred darshan. It was here that Atri muni, his wife Anusuiya and their three sons (who were the three incarnations of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh), lived and are said to have meditated.

 चित्रकूट में महासती अनुसुइया एवं उनके पति अत्रि मुनि का अति प्राचीन आश्रम मंदाकिनी के किनारे स्फटिक शिला एवं कामतानाथ जी से 15 किलोमीटर दक्षिण में स्थित है। यहाँ सती अनुसुइया और अत्रि से संबंधित ऐतिहासिक झाँकियाँ निर्मित हैं। इसी आश्रम से मंदाकिनी गंगा प्रकट हुई हैं। इस आश्रम में अत्रि मुनी, अनुसुइया, दत्तात्रेयय और दुर्वाशा मुनी की प्रतिमा स्थापित हैं।

इसी स्थान पर अनुसुइया ने तीन ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश को अपनी दिव्य शक्ति से बाल स्वरूप बनाकर पलने में पौढ़ा दिया था। क्योंकि ये तीनों माँ अनुसुइया की परीक्षा लेने आये थे। सती अनुसुइया द्वारा ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश को बालक बना देने और अपना दुग्धपान कराने की गीतों में कथा है- 

                                                                          माता अनुसुइया ने डाल दिया पालन,
                                                      झूल रहे तीन देव बन करके लालना।
                                                      मारे खुशी के मैया फुली नहीं समाती है,
                                                      गोदी में लेती कभी पालना झुलाती है।
                                                      उनके भाग्य की आज को करे सराहना,
                                                      झूल रहे तीन देव बन करके लालना।.....
